Celebrating the achievements of First Milk and the James Hutton Institute with the first-ever King’s Awards for Enterprise for Sustainable Development

Congratulations to First Milk and the James Hutton Institute for being individually recognized for their ground-breaking efforts in soil science and regenerative agriculture. The organisations played crucial roles in the Agricarbon journey and were instrumental in helping us solve the problem of soil carbon measurement at scale.

First Milk and The James Hutton Institute are true pioneers. Each organisation is driving the farming industry forward into a more regenerative future with its innovation and expertise. Working with Agricarbon, their efforts have contributed to unlocking the potential of soil carbon at scale with major positive consequences for farm profitability, people, and vitally the planet.

The James Hutton Institute was ever present in the conception of Agricarbon, providing valuable input to our methodology and scientific validation through their work with co-founder Stewart Arbuckle. They also shared their expertise in technical quality management and supported us during the trials and testing of our technology. Today, they continue to support us with their vast knowledge and understanding of monitoring changes in soil carbon.

First Milk is a company with strong sustainability ambitions and has recently gained B Corp status. Their soil carbon measurement program is a testament to their determination, and their large-scale project with Nestlé collected one of the largest datasets of real-world soil carbon measurements in the world. They were our first major customer and later, they provided investment to support the next stage of our technical innovation.

In recognition of their remarkable achievements, each organisation received the first-ever King’s Awards for Enterprise for Sustainable Development. These prestigious awards celebrate sustainable business excellence across the UK.

The James Hutton Institute and First Milk are leading the way toward a more sustainable future, and their unwavering commitment is truly commendable. It is an honor that the Agricarbon journey was influenced by such strong support, and we are delighted to see their efforts recognized by the King.

Dr. Helaina Black, Agricarbon’s Chief Scientist, praised the award;

“Fantastic news to hear that both First Milk and Hutton have received this inaugural prestigious Kings award. Recognising their leadership in sustainability serves to highlight how all aspects of agri-business can transition to net zero and adapt to climate change by combining science with practice”.
